Stop Telling People to Type /wp-admin

I work at a school where I build websites to help communicate information to our community. A lot of the people using these sites are not technical. They are teachers, staff, and administrators just trying to get where they need to go.

One small problem kept coming up over and over again. Getting to the WordPress admin.

Telling someone to type /wp-admin into the URL bar sounds simple, but in practice, it is not. For many people, that is already one step too far.

So naturally, you might think just add a login button to the front end. But that creates a different problem. Now everyone sees it, and people who should not be logging in suddenly try to.

This was only meant for a small group of users.

So I built something simpler.

Now I install this plugin and do not touch a single setting. You press Escape and you are in.

  • If you are logged in, you go straight to the admin
  • If you are logged out, it takes you to the login screen

That is it. No confusion, no extra UI, no explanation needed.

It just works.

But then I started thinking this might be useful for more than just my use case.

So I expanded it.

Now you can assign multiple shortcuts to any URL, on the front end or in the admin. Whether it is jumping to a specific page, a settings screen, or anywhere else in your site, you can get there instantly with a key press.

What started as a simple fix turned into a small tool that makes WordPress faster, cleaner, and easier to use, especially for people who do not want to think about how it works.

Sometimes the fastest way through WordPress is just one key away.
