So what is the difference between a Sturgeon moon and a Blue moon? Well, a blue moon is the third full moon in a season and a Sturgeon moon is the first full moon in August. It was nicknamed the Sturgeon moon by the indigenous people because it was the most readily caught fish during this time. According to the Farmer’s almanac, August is the best time to catch sturgeons.
Sturgeons are large fishes that mainly live in the Great lakes region. They can grow up to 200 pounds and measure 7 feet in length. There have been reports of over 1000 pound sturgeons once exisiting. However, those once popular fishes are now endangered.
Did you know that the Sturgeon is sometimes refered to as the fossil fish because its hasn’t changed or evolved much in the past millions of years?
