FUN FACT: Did you know that West Milford is the largest town in Passaic County accounting for 40% of the county? West Milford was first called New Milford, by the Dutch, when it was originally part of Western Bergen county. It is located in the Highlands where some of the oldest rocks can be found.
ANOTHER FUN FACT: These igneous and metamorphic rocks were believed to have been formed somewhere between 1.3 billion and 750 million years ago.
West Milford was Incorporated in 1834. The current population stands at about 27,000 people. Interestingly out of the approx 50,000 acres, west Milford takes up, 78% of that is forested and 83% of that is Preserved Lands because of their recognized ecological, natural, and cultural values.
The Bearfort Mountain is a ridge that’s located near the Wawayanda State Park in West Milford and the Appalachian Trail crosses along this ridge into New York.

Some things to do in West Milford include: Visiting the Apshawa Preserve where you can go hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, fishing, and bird watching. Hiking through the Hewitt State Forest, which offers hikers a chance to access the path, only accessible by foot, that leads to the Appalachian Trail. And boating or just relaxing on one of these serene lakes. Did you know: To this day there are mining operations in West Milford as well as active agriculture farms and farmers markets.
